Taper candles are one of the oldest candle forms β€” long, narrow, and designed to burn from tip to base. They have been on dining tables, in churches, and on mantles for centuries. Today, the best taper candles are sculptural objects in their own right: twisted, ombre, ribbed, and snake-form tapers have become some of the most shared home decor objects on the internet.

At Votive Candle Co., we make our taper candles from 100% natural soy wax in our Orlando, Florida studio. This guide covers everything you need to know before buying taper candles: types, sizes, what to look for in a holder, and how to style them at home.

What Is a Taper Candle?

A taper candle is a long, narrow candle that is wider at the base and tapers toward the tip. It requires a candlestick holder to stand upright. The standard base diameter is 7/8 inch (2.2 cm), which fits most standard candlestick and taper candle holders. Tapers typically range from 6 to 18 inches in height.

Unlike pillar candles, which stand on their own, taper candles depend on a holder for stability and drip containment. This is why choosing the right holder matters as much as choosing the candle.

Types of Taper Candles at Votive

Ribbed Taper Candle

Our most popular taper. Vertically ribbed in 100% natural soy wax, 27 cm (10.6 in.) tall, available in 10 colors including Ivory, Sage, Dusty Rose, Powder Blue, Lavender, and Black. Unscented. The architectural ribbed surface catches light across the ridges in a way smooth tapers simply do not. Works equally well for dinner tables, holiday tablescapes, and year-round shelf arrangements.

Twisted Taper Candle

A spiral-form taper in 100% soy wax, 25 cm (9.8 in.) tall, 10 colors. The twist creates a dynamic vertical line that reads as both sculptural and functional. One of the most shared taper candle designs on social platforms.

Ombre Taper Candle

A gradient taper candle transitioning from one color at the base to another at the tip. 10 in. tall, 10 gradient color options. Works especially well in color-considered interiors where a single-color taper would feel too flat.

Snake Taper Candle

A sculptural taper with a snake coiled around the body in Silver, Gold, or Copper finish. 8 candle colors. A bold dinner table decor choice that functions as a conversation piece as much as a candle.

Handmade Soy Wax Taper Candle Set

A set of handmade soy wax tapers in 10 colors, designed for flexibility and variety. A good starting point if you want to test colors or fill out a mixed taper arrangement.

Halloween and Seasonal Tapers

For seasonal display: our Halloween Taper Candles in Black, White, and Orange. For holiday settings: our Ribbed Taper in Ivory or Sage is the strongest choice for Advent and December dinner tables. See our full Christmas taper candles guide and Halloween taper candles guide.

Taper Candle Sizes: What to Know

Standard taper candles range from 6 to 18 inches tall. The most common sizes:

  • 6 inch β€” short, for compact arrangements or travel holders
  • 10 inch / 25 cm β€” the most common dinner candle height
  • 12 inch / 30 cm β€” classic formal dining height
  • 18 inch β€” statement taper for dramatic arrangements

Our twisted and ombre tapers are approximately 25 cm (9.8 in.) and our ribbed tapers are 27 cm (10.6 in.). Both fit standard 7/8 inch holders.

Taper Candle Holders: What Works Best

The holder choice shapes the entire aesthetic of a taper arrangement. Key options:

  • Classic brass candlesticks β€” formal, warm, works with Ivory and warm-toned tapers
  • Black iron holders β€” gothic, dramatic, best with Black or deep jewel-toned tapers
  • Clear glass holders β€” modern, minimal, lets the candle color read without competition
  • Terracotta and ceramic holders β€” earthy, handmade-adjacent, pairs well with Sage, Ivory, and dusty rose tapers

The base of all our taper candles is 2.2 cm. If a holder runs slightly small, gently warm the base of the candle with your hands to soften the wax and ease it into place.

How to Style Taper Candles

Dining table

Pairs of taper candles in matching holders at the center of the table, flanking a low centerpiece. For unscented tapers (all our soy taper candles are unscented), the candlelight is the contribution, not fragrance, which makes them ideal for dining where food aromas should lead.

Mantle

Three taper candles at graduated heights, placed slightly off-center. Surround with seasonal accents. Mix two taper forms, such as Ribbed and Twisted, in the same color for a curated, collected feel.

Shelf and vignette

A single tall taper in a simple holder, placed between books or beside a sculptural candle. The vertical form creates visual punctuation in a horizontal shelf arrangement.

Soy Wax Taper Candles vs. Paraffin

Most mass-market taper candles are paraffin. They drip dramatically, burn with visible soot, and release benzene and toluene into your dining room air. Our taper candles are 100% natural soy wax, which burns with significantly less soot and no known toxic emissions. The same elegant visual, without the air quality compromise.
