What Is a Pillar Candle?

A pillar candle is a wide, freestanding wax candle that does not require a holder to stand upright. They typically range from 3 inches to 12+ inches in height and 2 to 4 inches in diameter. The wax is the entire structure — no glass vessel, no paper sleeve, no separate holder needed.

Pillar candles differ from:

• Taper candles — long, narrow candles that require a holder to stand upright
• Jar candles — wax poured into a glass container with a lid
• Votive candles — small, compact candles designed for a protective votive holder

Twisted and Swirl Pillar Candles

Twisted and swirl pillar candles feature a spiral form — either a tight helical twist or a flowing organic swirl. These are the most dramatic pillar candle form and work especially well as standalone statement pieces.

Striped and Geometric Pillar Candles

Striped and geometric pillar candles add pattern to the traditional cylindrical form. Stripes can be subtle tonal variations or bold contrasts. Geometric forms — faceted, angled, or multisided — create shadow play as the wax catches light.

Lace and Texture Pillar Candles

Lace-texture pillar candles have a molded surface pattern that creates an intricate shadow effect when lit. The texture diffuses the light, giving the candle a stained-glass quality at night.

Cone Pillar Candles

Cone-shaped pillar candles taper from base to a point. These are among the most architectural pillar forms and work especially well in arrangements where graduated height is needed.

Soy Wax Pillar Candles vs. Paraffin

Most mass-market pillar candles are made from paraffin. Our entire pillar candle collection is made from 100% natural soy wax — which burns with significantly less soot, no known toxic emissions, and is biodegradable. Soy wax pillar candles are also typically made harder (with higher melt point additives) to maintain their form as freestanding objects, which is why all-soy pillars hold their shape without a glass vessel.

How to Style Pillar Candles

Single statement piece

A single large pillar candle — the High Swirl or a tall Ribbed Pillar — on a console table, entry table, or sideboard. Give it a clear plate or slate coaster underneath to catch any drips. No other decoration needed if the form is strong enough to carry the space.

Grouped arrangement

Group three pillar candles at different heights. Use odd numbers (one, three, five) for visual balance. Mix forms — a knotted pillar, a striped pillar, a ribbed pillar — in the same color palette for a collected, curated feel.

Centerpiece

A cluster of three pillar candles — different heights, same color family — at the center of a dining table, surrounded by seasonal accents (dried botanicals, pine cones, fruit). Mantle display

Candle Care for Pillar Candles

• Always burn on a heat-safe plate or tray — freestanding pillars can pool wax at the base
• Trim wick to 1/4 inch before every burn
• First burn: let the melt pool reach all edges — prevents tunneling in larger diameter pillars
• Keep burns to 3–4 hours maximum per session
• Never burn in a draft — pillar candles are more susceptible to uneven burning than jar candles
