If you share your home with a cat or dog, the question of whether candles are safe is a real one. The short answer: it depends on the wax, the fragrance, and the wick. Most mass-market candles are made from paraffin wax with synthetic fragrance oils, and neither is ideal in a home with pets. Understanding what to look for makes the difference.
Cats are more sensitive to airborne compounds than humans. Their livers lack certain enzymes that metabolize specific synthetic chemicals, including some found in fragrance compounds. This makes them more vulnerable to the byproducts of burning candles, particularly paraffin candles, which release benzene and toluene (both EPA-classified hazardous air pollutants) when burned.
Cat safe candles share two key characteristics:
Our entire candle collection uses 100% non-GMO soy wax and phthalate-free fragrance oils, addressing both main concerns for cat households.
Dogs are generally less acutely sensitive than cats, but they are still affected by poor air quality from candle burning. Dogs with respiratory sensitivities, such as flat-faced breeds like French Bulldogs and Pugs, should be in well-ventilated spaces whenever any candle is burning. Pet friendly candles for dog households should also use a lead-free cotton wick, as older zinc-core wicks release small amounts of heavy metal particulate when burned.
All of our candles are made from 100% non-GMO soy wax with phthalate-free fragrance oils and lead-free cotton wicks. They meet all four criteria above.
Our wickless candle line is the ideal solution for pet households. Used with a candle warmer lamp, wickless candles produce no combustion at all. The wax melts gently through heat diffusion, releasing fragrance without any open flame, smoke, or soot. No combustion byproducts means no air quality concerns for cats or dogs.
Our sculptural candle collection is made entirely from natural soy wax with phthalate-free fragrance. These are decorative candles that most pet owners choose to display unlit, which eliminates any air quality concern entirely.
Floral, vanilla, sandalwood, and woody scent families are the safest categories for most pet households.
Even the cleanest-burning soy candle benefits from good ventilation. Always burn candles in a room that is at least partially ventilated. This is especially important in small rooms with cats, who are closer to the floor where heavier compounds settle and spend more continuous time in a single space.
