The fluted column was not purely decorative. When Greek architects at the Parthenon carved 20 vertical channels into each of the temple’s 46 columns, they understood something optical: that a ribbed surface catches light from one side and throws shadow from the other, giving a static stone cylinder the appearance of movement. The flutes made the column look thinner at any given angle while making the overall form look more substantial. Vitruvius devoted an entire section of De Architectura to the cannelurae — the rules of channel number, depth, and spacing. The vocabulary spread from Doric to Ionic to Corinthian orders, from Greece to Rome to every neoclassical building in the Western world. Two thousand five hundred years later, the ribbed column is still the canonical form of the decorative pillar.
