In 1623, Gian Lorenzo Bernini began designing the great baldachin above the tomb of Saint Peter in the Vatican — the massive bronze canopy that still stands 29 meters high over the high altar of St. Peter's Basilica. For its four supporting columns, Bernini chose the twisted, barley-sugar spiral form known as the Solomonic column. The choice was deliberate: these columns were said to have been taken from the Temple of Solomon in Jerusalem by the Emperor Titus in 70 CE and brought to Rome. Whether that was historically accurate mattered less than the symbolic claim — the spiral column carried the weight of sacred architecture across millennia. The helical twist was not decoration; it was lineage.
