The pillar is the oldest sculptural form. Before the column, before the obelisk, there were standing stones — menhirs, dolmens, the great uprights at Stonehenge — which is to say that the impulse to place a vertical form on a surface and let it mean something runs deeper than civilization. The sculptor Constantin Brancusi spent a career returning to this: his Endless Column in Romania repeated a ribbed module stacked upward, as if the pillar itself could be the subject of art.
