In the 17th century, a Flemish needlepoint lace collar could require 600 hours to produce. Not 60 — 600. Each stitch placed with a needle on a linen pillow, the pattern built from negative space: thread defining void, void becoming motif. The result was so labor-intensive that a lace collar worth its own weight in gold was not an exaggeration. Louis XIV's finance minister Colbert banned the importation of foreign lace in 1665 to stop the drain on French currency — the annual lace import bill alone was 2 million livres. He then established state lace schools in eight French cities. No other textile commanded the same economic and social weight. The pattern was the point — and the pattern was made of what wasn't there.
The Medium Vintage Lace Pillar Candle transfers that logic to soy wax. The lace mold impresses its negative geometry into the surface — every void becomes texture, every thread becomes shadow.
