The earliest surviving printed herbarium is Benedetto Rinio's Liber de simplicibus, completed in Venice around 1415 — 440 pressed plant specimens mounted on vellum, each annotated with the plant's Latin name, properties, and origin. The tradition it formalized was already centuries old: the systematic collection, pressing, and preservation of botanical specimens for study and memory. By 1542, Leonhart Fuchs published De historia stirpium in Basel, a landmark in botanical science whose woodcut illustrations were so precise that botanists still use them as reference today. A generation later, Georg Dionysius Ehret — the German illustrator who worked for Sir Hans Sloane and whose drawings became the foundation of the British Museum's natural history collection — elevated botanical art to a form that required equal parts scientific observation and compositional skill. The herbarium specimen, pressed flat and mounted, was a form of permanence: the living plant arrested at its peak.
