Roman stonemasons carving the inscriptions on Trajan's Column in 113 CE developed what is still considered the most legible serif letterform in Western history — the proportions so precisely calibrated that Edward Catich, the priest and calligrapher who documented them in 1961, concluded they were first painted onto the stone with a broad brush before the chisel touched the marble. The letterform was an art object before it was a communication tool. Medieval illuminators took this further: the decorated initial that opened a manuscript chapter could take weeks to paint, entirely separate from the text it announced. The letter had become a subject in its own right.
