In June 1662, Louis XIV staged the Grand Carrousel in the large courtyard to the west of the Tuileries Palace. Five quadrilles of nobles — each representing a different civilization, each in elaborate costume — rode horses and chariots in a choreographed display that lasted two days. The word carrousel came from the Italian carosello, a cavalry training exercise in which riders on horseback threw clay balls at each other while circling. By the time it reached the French court, it had evolved from a military drill into a spectacle of display, and Louis built a permanent plaza named the Place du Carrousel to commemorate it. The fairground carousel — powered by steam, open to everyone — emerged in the early 19th century as the mechanical heir to this aristocratic pageant. By the 1890s and 1910s, a golden age of carousel craftsmanship had taken hold in the United States: workshops run by PTC (Philadelphia Toboggan Company), Marcus Illions, and Charles Carmel produced hand-carved wooden horses with individually blown glass eyes, real horsehair tails, and gold-leaf decoration. Today, the finest surviving carousel horses are collected as American folk art and held in museum collections.
